How the Egypt visa works
Egypt offers Indian passport holders two routes. Travellers who already hold a valid or recently used visa from the Schengen area, United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Japan or New Zealand are generally eligible for a visa on arrival at Cairo and other international airports. Everyone else applies for the electronic visa in advance, which takes about a week. The e-Visa is single or multiple entry with a 30-day stay. Travellers going only to the Sinai resorts on a short trip may qualify for a free entry permit instead, which does not allow travel to the rest of Egypt.

Where Egypt applications go wrong
Visa on arrival eligibility is conditional and changeable
It depends on holding a qualifying third-country visa. The published list and the conditions attached to it have changed more than once, so eligibility should be confirmed close to travel rather than assumed.
The Sinai permit is not a visa
The free Sinai-only entry permit covers Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab and Taba for a limited period. It does not permit travel to Cairo, Luxor or the pyramids, which requires a full visa.
e-Visa processing is slower than travellers expect
Five to seven working days is normal and delays around Egyptian public holidays are common. It is not a same-week solution for a last-minute booking.
Visa types
Single entry e-Visa
One entry with a stay of up to 30 days, valid for entry within three months of issue.
Multiple entry e-Visa
Multiple entries with up to 30 days per stay, useful for regional itineraries.
Visa on arrival
For eligible travellers holding a qualifying visa from a listed country, purchased at the airport on arrival.
Sinai entry permit
Free permit for short stays limited to the South Sinai resort area.
