How the Vietnam visa works

Vietnam issues Indian passport holders an electronic visa valid up to 90 days, single or multiple entry, through the national immigration portal. There is no interview and no embassy visit. The catch is that the portal gives no useful error messages: an application with a photo that fails the automated check simply comes back rejected days later with the fee gone, and you start again.

Where Vietnam applications go wrong

The portal photo rules are unusually strict

Two images are required — a straight-on portrait with no glasses, and a full scan of the passport data page. Both must be JPEG within the size limits, with no border, no shadow and no glare from the passport laminate.

Your port of entry is locked to the visa

You must name the airport or land border you will use. Arriving somewhere else means refused entry. If your itinerary is not final, choose the international airport you are most likely to use and tell us before we file.

Third-party 'official' sites overcharge

Many search results for the Vietnam e-visa are lookalike commercial sites charging several times the government fee. The only official portal is the immigration department's own domain.

Vietnam visa questions

Can I enter Vietnam at any airport with an e-visa?＋

Only at the port of entry named in your application, and only at ports designated for e-visa holders. Changing it after issue requires a fresh application.

Is visa on arrival still available?＋

Visa on arrival requires a pre-approval letter arranged by a Vietnamese sponsor and is now largely redundant for Indian tourists, since the e-visa covers up to 90 days.

How long does the e-visa take?＋

Officially three working days; in practice three to five. Applications filed just before Tet or other national holidays take longer.

What if my passport is renewed after the visa is issued?＋

The e-visa is tied to the passport number. A new passport means a new application — travel on the passport named in the visa.
