How the Malaysia visa works

Malaysia has extended visa-free entry for Indian passport holders for short tourist visits, subject to conditions on return tickets, funds and accommodation. What has not gone away is the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card, which every traveller must submit within three days before arrival, and the eVISA, which is still required for longer stays, study, employment and for travellers who do not meet the exemption conditions. Because the exemption has been extended year by year, always confirm the current end date before you book.

Where Malaysia applications go wrong

The Digital Arrival Card is compulsory and separate

MDAC is not a visa and carries no fee, but arriving without it causes long delays at the counter. It must be filed within three days of arrival, not weeks in advance.

Exemption conditions are checked at the gate

Onward or return ticket, hotel confirmation and sufficient funds are all conditions of visa-free entry. Airlines in India verify them before boarding and Malaysian immigration checks them again on arrival.

The exemption has an expiry date

Visa-free entry for Indian nationals has been renewed in blocks rather than made permanent. If your travel date falls after the currently announced end date, plan for an eVISA.
