How the Indonesia / Bali visa works

Indian passport holders are eligible for Indonesia's visa on arrival, which can be bought at the airport counter or, far more sensibly, applied for online in advance as an e-VOA. It grants 30 days and can be extended once for another 30 days without leaving the country. Alongside it, every arriving traveller must file the electronic customs declaration and, at times, a health declaration — both separate from the visa and both checked before you reach the exit.

e-VOA payment is where applications die

The government portal charges in Indonesian rupiah and rejects a large share of Indian cards. Failed payments leave applications half-created, and travellers assume they are done until the airline asks for the visa.

The customs declaration is separate and mandatory

The electronic customs declaration must be filed close to arrival and produces a QR code that is scanned at the exit. It has nothing to do with the visa and is missed by most first-time travellers.

Six months validity, strictly enforced

Indonesian immigration is unusually literal about the six-month passport validity rule and about having at least one blank page. Both are checked at the airline counter in India.

Can I just buy the visa on arrival at Bali airport?＋

Yes, the counter still exists. The queue at peak hours is long and card payments sometimes fail, which is why most travellers prefer the e-VOA.

Can the 30 days be extended?＋

Yes, once, for a further 30 days. The extension must be filed before the original permit expires.

Is the customs declaration part of the visa?＋

No. It is a separate electronic form filed shortly before arrival that generates a QR code scanned when you leave the arrival hall.

Does the e-VOA work at all airports?＋

It is accepted at designated international entry points, which include Bali, Jakarta, Surabaya and other major airports and seaports.
