How the Türkiye visa works

Türkiye's e-Visa is available to Indian nationals on a conditional basis: you must hold a valid visa or residence permit from a Schengen country, the United States, United Kingdom or Ireland, and the supporting visa must be valid on the date you enter Türkiye. Applicants who do not meet that condition file a sticker visa application at the Turkish consulate, which is slower and requires a full financial file. The most common failure is booking a trip on the assumption of e-Visa eligibility and discovering that the supporting Schengen visa expires two days before the Istanbul arrival date.

Where Türkiye applications go wrong

Your supporting visa must be valid on the entry date

Not on the application date — on the day you land in Türkiye. A Schengen visa that expires mid-trip invalidates the e-Visa and means refused boarding.

e-Residence and single-entry conditions

The supporting visa or residence permit generally cannot be an electronic visa itself, and specific categories are excluded. The conditions are published and change periodically.

Consulate route needs a full financial file

Applicants without a qualifying supporting visa go through the consulate with bank statements, employment proof, insurance and bookings — closer to a Schengen file than to an e-Visa form.

  • Valid Schengen, US, UK or Ireland visa or residence permit, valid on the entry date
  • Confirmed hotel booking and return ticket

The process, step by step

  1. 1

    Eligibility check

We verify whether your supporting visa qualifies and is valid on your intended entry date — the step travellers skip most often.

  2. 2

    Route selection

Eligible applicants go the e-Visa route; everyone else gets a consulate file prepared instead of losing days to a rejected e-Visa.

  3. 3

    Filing

The e-Visa is filed on the official government portal, or the consulate application submitted with the full document set.

  4. 4

    Approval

e-Visas are usually issued within one to three working days. Consulate applications take considerably longer.

Türkiye visa questions

Can any Indian passport holder get the Türkiye e-Visa?

No. It is conditional on holding a valid Schengen, US, UK or Ireland visa or residence permit that is valid on the date of entry to Türkiye.

What if my Schengen visa expires during the trip?

It must be valid on the day you enter Türkiye. If it expires before that date, the e-Visa is not valid and you need the consulate route.

Is a visa needed to transit through Istanbul?

Passengers who stay airside on a single connecting itinerary generally do not need a visa. Leaving the airport requires one.

How long can I stay?

The e-Visa permits a 30-day single entry stay. Longer or multiple entry stays go through the consulate.
